As summer sunsets get shorter and fall whispers a cool hello, I invite you to join the Trillium community in ritual, celebration, and connection to mark the autumnal Equinox.
Human community, past, present, and future, thrives on celebration. In fact, this practice is absolutely necessary for collective well-being.
Intact indigenous cultural celebrations are deeply anchored in seasonal and natural transitions and cycles. Our ancestors knew very well that our survival is impossible without the gifts of this generous Mother planet.
NO GRATITUDE, NO THRIVING
We have so much to celebrate in this season of balance: the abundant harvest of the land, summer's weaving of community resilience, and most especially for me, the blossoming of the Trillium community that you all have lovingly tended 🌱🚿💚
We also have so much to grieve. The losses and pains go beyond genocides, ecocides, and deportations. Whatever you are grieving, I invite you to bring it to the event’s altar. This altar will be adorned and candle-lit by what you offer.
The third annual Equinox Celebration will be on Mapes Creek in Rainier Beach, most importantly because it's nestled in a precious remnant forest that the Trillium community has been stewarding. It's also spacious, serene, and rich with beauty.
If you have ever been to a Trillium wilderness walk, workshop, or event, this gathering is for you.
If you have been a student or mentee, this gathering is for you.
If you are a partner, collaborator, colleague, or comrade, this gathering is for you.
If you are a neighbor or part of my extended communities, this gathering is for you.
If you are looking to meet and weave with like-minded tenders and open hearts, this gathering is for you.
If you are new and curious about Trillium and what we're up to, this gathering is for you.
Some Details
potluck Feast 🌽
We will set the table for a seasonal potluck—an altar of abundance.
Bring a simple or elaborate dish or beverage to adorn and break bread.
Cultural dishes are especially appreciated.
No stress if you are unable to contribute. Come as you are. Your presence is the gift
We will not have access to electricity or a stove!
Grief Altar 🕯️🕯️🕯️
The altar space will be open to receive any items that name and honor the loss and the pain.
I invite you to bring items for their beauty, medicine, or elemental significance.
The meaning of the items you bring is for you - no explanation necessary.
Examples: bits of nature, herbal medicine, flowers, incense, photos, art, fabrics, heirlooms, written words, or ancestral items.
Lanterns are also welcome.
Harvest Exchange & Tree giveaway 🍅🍆🌲
Gift exchange is an integral foundation of resilient cultures and communities. You are invited to bring to the table anything you would like to gift. And of course, exchange includes receiving.
The most potent and sweet gifts are food and hand crafted. Your garden bounty(fruits and veggies), preserved foods, herbal medicine, flowers, and crafts are a great fit here.
You don’t need to bring a huge quantity. A garden tomato, bundle of herbs, or single can of pickles will be your portal to live into gift exchange.
Only gifts that you see precious. Ones that you would be thrilled to take home. Not dregs of your pantry! 😝
The Mapes Creek cohort will be offering potted trees and shrubs from our nursery. Ones we’ve been tending and relating with
Seed Exchange 🌾🌾🌾
When we think of harvest, we think of food. But what about seeds? These precious beings are an even more important part of the season. Without them, next season cannot sprout.
At a time of climate uncertainty and unstable supply chains, our resilience is absolutely dependent on a hyper local seed bank.
And of course, every seed carries the spirits of the beings of who tend them. Bring this gift and power into your own garden and pass it around.
Bring out your seeds and be ready to take some home. We’ll have containers and labels.
Home grown and harvested seeds are ideal but not required.
Processed seeds are ideal, but not required.
Again, no dregs please. Bring out seeds that are well preserved from the last 3 years
pROGRAM 🎤
The event’s highlight is the program from 2pm to 4pm. This is time to be tend the heart of the celebration, tell story, shout out some people, make some prayers, and give the floor to collaborators and allies to tell us of their work and cross pollinate.
We will open and close with ceremony.
There will be an open mic for gratitude, poetry, spoken word, shout outs, and prayers. We invite your contributions 💛
There will also be song! Musicians are invited to bring their instruments! Come a little before the program to scheme.
