WELCOME TO MAPES CREEK
A land and culture tending practice. An ongoing series to learn the process and be in relationship. Guided by indigenous and Social Forestry principals. In collaboration with Green Seattle Partnership 💚🌲
Trillium offers this justice-oriented container as an opportunity to build connections, learn, practice, heal, create, and weave resilient communities anchored in land and water.
This event is a little bit of everything. Seattle Forest Week, workshop, show and tell, and some hands-on forest tending.
The focus of this workshop is to share what we know about the factors for successful forest planting and how to do it with the least amount of resources, labor, and brown crispy plants.
We will also show you our plant nursery and learn the basics of starting and tending one. This will be the spot where we do our hands-on portion of the workshop.
Planting trees is the easy part. The hard part is raising them 🌱👶
This event is for everyone, and we especially call in current forest stewards and seasoned volunteers. We are eager to build a richer community of stewards with knowledge share!
The Trillium community has been tending forest and creek with an emphasis on building a community of stewards who is in a living, attuned relationship with the land and with each other.
We move slow. We cultivate a sense of place. And we are building skills and deepening ecological literacy. And we love to share meals!
We feel clarity about the importance of this frame and we are eager to share what have been learning so far 💚

THE CREEK
These waters run through unceded Duwamish Territory and have been tended by Coast Salish peoples for millennia. We advocate for their justice, honor their stewardship, and walk in their footsteps.
Today, the creek is tended by many communities of caregivers.
We collaborate with them in shared care for the land and in a spirit of respect and humility.
The first water drops of Mapes Creek percolate through a remnant second-growth forest in South Seattle, where we will be visiting and tending.
It meanders in the recovering forest and through Kubota Garden, where it fills a necklace of ponds.
It then plunges into a dark pipe as it runs through the Rainier Beach neighborhood.
It sees daylight again through Be’er Sheva park as a recovering salmon habitat, and pours into x̌ačuʔ (Hatchu - Lake Washington).
PREPARE YOURSELF!
We will be moving through some brush, uneven surfaces, and slopes. Dress for the occasion!
We will have access to a restroom and drinking water, but please bring your own water to start.
We invite you to bring any offerings to the land for ceremony time 🪶💌🌿🖼️✨
This event is free to all
